Is your smoothie powering up your day?I love smoothies because they are super easy, refreshing and delicious. Plus, they start your day off with a huge dose of energy producing nutrients or give you a boost if you are feeling low energy in the afternoon. There are so many options and variations. I just make sure that I keep all the healthy ingredients on hand so that I can mix one up super efficiently when the need arises. And...I always make sure that I include a handful of leafy greens to sneak in a serving without even knowing.
Today I had a lunch/afternoon smoothie and it was so filling and satisfying. Nutrient wise it was packed full of vitamins including A, C, K and B-complex. It also included very important minerals such as potassium, iron, manganese, copper and zinc. And let's not forget about the all important Omega-3 fatty acids, gut-healthy fiber and phytonutrients. All of these nutrients work together to provide you the energy to power through your day.
Handful of greens-baby spinach, kale, power greens-whatever you prefer
1/4 c. blueberries ( I keep mine frozen-makes the smoothie nice and cold)
1 Tbsp. ground flaxseed meal
1 Tsp. spirulina
Fresh grated ginger root
2 Tbsp. Greek yogurt
Squeeze of 1/4 lemon
A few sprigs of fresh mint
A few shakes of cinnamon (helps to keep your blood sugar balanced)
Fill 1/2 with unsweetened vanilla almond milk (or whatever milk product you use) and 1/2 with filtered water
Blend (I make it in a big cup and use a stick blender)
After blending, stir in a tablespoon of chia seeds for an extra energy and fiber boost.
